Google: Duplicate content in the description text of products doesn't have to hurt

The use of description texts for products that come from the manufacturer can lead to duplicate content, but does not have to be harmful.

Many e-commerce website operators are faced with the problem that they cannot create individual texts for the large number of products offered on their websites. They then often use the manufacturer's description texts, which leads to duplicate content. However, this does not have to be problematic with regard to the search.

In the Google Search Central SEO Office Hours on September 17, John Müller first stated that Google would not impose any penalties or manual measures for duplicate content - unless an entire website was copied, as is the case with scraper websites, for example .

When checking for duplicate content, Google always rates the entire page, including the header, the texts, etc. If a part of a page, such as the description of a product, appears on another page, it shouldn't be a problem. Google just wants to avoid multiple snippets containing the same text on a search results page. That is why Google decides on one of the pages for corresponding search queries and if there are several pages with the same text.

However, it could well be that the product page of an e-commerce page with the same text is preferred to the manufacturer's page - for example, if Google recognizes an intention to buy when a search query is made and the shop has the product in stock.

It is true that it is ideal to create your own description texts, but that is not always possible, Müller continues.
