Reconnect with your heritage by picking up books written in Bengali

Why is there a need to reconnect?

With the world moving on to newer and trendier things, heritage and culture can sometimes take a back seat. You are constantly on the move to find something more exciting and challenging.

Learning English has opened doors for you. A major part of the world operates in English. When you know English you get access to more opportunities.

Consider a novel. Even if the original story is not written in English, it is more likely to get translated to English than any other language. So once you learn English your possible library has expanded even more.

This is not limited to books and other written material. Movies and television shows are dubbed more frequently in English compared to any other language.

What books should we read to know about Bengali heritage and culture?

I think the classic Bengali book that everyone should read is Bibhutibhushan Bandhyopathay’s Pather Panchali. This is a story about a simply Brahmin family that struggles to survive over the course of the book. It is based in rural life in Bengal in the early 1900s. The characters feel very real and you would become very attached to them by the end of the novel.

Other books that you can read are Ghare o Baire by Rabindranath Tagore or even the beautiful poems written by him.

Are books the only way we can reconnect with our part?

It is not necessary to read in Bengali to know about Bengali culture and heritage. If that was the logic then reading the newspaper in Bengali would have been enough to keep you connected to your history.

Newspaper can be a medium to keep the language alive within you. You can also watch movies and television shows to remain connected with who you are and where you are from. Sometimes, even a simple interaction in Bengali can bring back memories.

For example, if you are in a different city or different country. Finding someone who speaks the same language as you can be exhilarating. You form a connection with them just because you share a mother tongue and culture. Even if that culture is not identical. You can relate to that person and share your childhood experiences.

Amid changing times retaining a bit of your culture within you will help you. You can maintain the relationship you have with your parents and your family. Especially the elders in your family. Bengali book online purchase is available on the website of Bookmak.
