Today we spend most of our time online. We are becoming more dependent upon the internet.
Without the internet, we can not imagine our daily life. Due to the pandemic, most people are
working remotely. People can access company information from anywhere. To keep their data
safe companies are working regularly. Students are taking their classes online. Those who do
not have proper knowledge fill their information everywhere without even reading the complete
page. Technology makes our lives easy and fast but we also have fear of losing our personal
information or data.
After seeing today’s scenario we can say that cyber security is the only way to protect our data
and information. As per the IBM report, the average cost of a data breach reached $4.24 million
per incident. The average cost has increased by 10% compared to the year 2020.
Cybercrime is increasing day by day and the worst thing is we could not tap the culprit easily.
Cybercriminals are getting smarter. Cybercriminals do not attack suddenly; they find ways to
enter your system and then execute the crime. People are not much aware of cybercrimes.
More than 4 lakh complaints have been filed in the field of financial fraud in less than a year.
Let’s discuss what types of cyber-attacks are happening around us.
1. Malware
Malware is software that includes ransomware, viruses, and spyware. This software comes in a
downloaded format like zip files or email attachments. When users download files from unknown
sources or click on some unknown links then this software installs into the computer which can
damage or cause harm to the computer. The latest example of ransomware is CovidLock
happened in the year 2020 when the pandemic hit the world and everything slowed down the
attackers became more active, they start offering some attractive offers and misleading
information of the coronavirus disease mostly in downloadable format.
2. Phishing
Phishing is the process in which an attacker may ask you for your bank account details and
some other personal information. Phishing can be done via call or email. Major phishing attacks
happened through google docs, account update e-mail, advance payment emails, account suspended emails, and so on. The biggest phishing attack happened with Facebook and
Google. The attacker sent fake invoices to the companies. The scam came to the notice and
both companies took legal action.
3. DDoS ( distributed denial-of-service)
In a DDoS attack, the attacker targets the internet server and floods with undesirable traffic which
stops the normal traffic to reach its desirable location. In February 2020, the Amazon web server
reported a massive DDoS attack. This attack saw coming traffic of 2.3 Terabits per second.
4. Middle in the Man (MitM)
This type of attack happens when the attacker puts himself between the client and server. In
2015 Lenovo had pre-installed software named SuperFish visual search. This issue raise when
users showed their concern about the scans of SSL encrypted web traffic. Later Microsoft
updated the windows which removed SuperFish software.
5. Zero-day exploit
A zero-day exploit happens when the attacker exploits the network when it is new or just
released. According to the reports in 2021, around 66 zero-days attacks have been found which
is almost double as compared to the last year. The latest example of a zero-day exploit is
Log4shell. This allows an attacker to have complete control over the servers and gain access to
the system.
