Difference Between Biscuits & Cookies – Are You Too Among The Confused Population

They're a must-have companion to your tea, coffee and milk; you've seen them in a variety of desserts, and let's not forget the countless times you slipped into the kitchen at odd hours to find your jar brimming with joy. We're talking about cookies and biscuits, as you might have guessed. We all have biscuit memories at the tea table (morning and evening) where we have enjoyed their crisp company much before, we were allowed to have our share of tea, while the elders of the family enjoyed their hot cup of tea and coffee and discussed important things while munching on their must have snack. With youngsters finishing the whole pack, leaving the elders with nothing was never considered a wrong-doing. These memories are our children’s present that we relish every day.

Though we can go on and on with our biscuit past and present, we are going to dedicate this blog to an important discussion- What makes a cookie, a cookie? And a biscuit, a biscuit? What is the primary difference between the two?

The distinction between a biscuit and a cookie is, ironically, a strongly discussed matter! In many parts of the World, a biscuit is considered a savoury, crumbly baked item. These biscuits, which are brown on the outside and soft on the interior, are very different from the various types of pastry and cakes or what we have known for centuries, The English Scone.

Despite their variances, one thing is constant: biscuits and cookies are scrumptious and wonderful no matter how they're baked! Let’s delve into what makes each of these baked treats special in this blog.

So, let's get this party started!

You might hear people giving too many self-acclaimed differences but the two primary differences that actually make them different are:

1)   The Texture & Technique - The primary distinction between a biscuit and a cookie is the way they are made. The term "cookie" comes from the Dutch word "koekje," which means "little cake." Actually, they were the accidental recipes, wherein they were created to test the oven's temperature before baking an actual cake. Cookies are created from a soft, thick dough, similar to cake, and are denser than a biscuit. Cookies are chunkier, softer, and larger than their biscuit counterparts when they're done.

Biscuit, on the other hand, is derived from the Latin words 'bis' (twice) and 'coquere' (cooked). It basically translates as "twice cooked!" Biscuits require a stiffer dough to achieve the right texture, as they are thinner, fluffier, and firmer than cookies. Flour, butter and sugar are usually the only ingredients used to make these wonderfully crumbly delights. As a result, they're the ideal dippable delicacy, absorbing the rich flavours of tea, coffee and milk!

2)   The Add-ons - The inclusions are what makes the cookie so special. Nuts, chocolate, raisins, caramel bits, smarties and more can be found in the recipes. A cookie can be topped with a variety of delectable ingredients. Before baking, these inclusions are added to the batter, which gives the batter a dense texture. Once the baking and cooling are done, not much is needed on the outside, which means rarely you will find a cookie decorated on the outside.

Due to their simple ingredients, biscuits, on the other hand, are ideal candidates for final touches and decorations. Many of them are dipped and enrobed in various chocolates. Caramel and/or Chocolate can also be poured on top. Anmol biscuits, which are the Best-selling biscuits in India have cream variants like Yummy Chocolate, Choco Mazaa, Yummy Orange, etc that are filled with a cream or jam filling, sandwiched between two biscuits.

Which Do You Prefer: Biscuits or Cookies?

Both biscuits and cookies have distinct qualities and taste benefits. They are similar and different in many ways, but they are both great with a nice cup of tea, coffee and milk!
