How Writing Skills Can Affect A Career?

Essential writing skills are important in many aspects of life.  They are especially important in a person’s career, but not all of the people are essay writers and have needed skills.  All a person must do in order to see the importance of effective writing skills is to look at job advertisements.  Most job advertisements have effective written communication skills listed as a required or preferred skill.  Effective writing skills are essential, regardless of the career path, both when applying for a job and when working in one’s career.

Effective writing skills are essential when searching for a job.  When a person applies for a job, they are required to provide application materials, such as a cover letter, resume, or job application.  These materials provide a potential employer with an initial impression of the job candidate.  If a cover letter is poorly written or includes numerous typos or grammatical errors, the employer may stop reviewing the job candidate’s materials.  A cover letter must make a good first impression on the employer; therefore, it should be well-written and accurately illustrate how the job candidate would be a good fit for the company or organization. Each year, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) conducts a job outlook survey of employers.  One of the survey items involves the attributes companies and organizations are looking for in their candidates.  In April 2021, the NACE report showed written communication skills to be in the top five skills that employers are seeking. If a job applicant does not demonstration effective writing skills on a cover letter, resume, and other application materials, the applicant will likely not be a top candidate for the job.

Not only are writing skills important when applying for a job, but they are required in most any career.  Regardless of a person’s career, they will likely be drafting emails and other correspondence within and outside of the organization.  If one does not have effective written communication skills, they may have trouble getting their point across.  Additionally, being an effective writer allows employees to be more persuasive, as they understand the structure of a logical argument and can express their thoughts and ideas in a way that others can easily understand.  An article on Fresno Pacific University’s website noted that “Everything is public and eternal. The chances of being misunderstood or miscommunicating information are greater than ever” (“Writing and Communication Skills”).  With so much communication being digitalized, it is more important than ever before to have effective written communication skills.  These documents are available to many people and can exist much longer than the writer.

Not only do effective written communication skills help employees become more persuasive and share their thoughts in a manner that is understandable, but writing allows introverts to stand out.  According to Mottet et al., the job performance of extroverts is typically rated more positively than that of introverts.  However, that same source noted that research on workplace communication and personality has shown that introverts tend to prefer thinking before communicating, making writing a great way for introverts to communicate.  If introverts have time to gather their thoughts and craft a thoughtful response, they will likely be more comfortable communicating in the workplace, leading to greater productivity and creativity.

As can be seen, effective written communication skills are essential for any profession.  Not only does an applicant have a better chance of being hired, but they also stand a better chance of being effective in the workplace, whether they are introverted or extraverted.  Writing is not just a skill that is preferred by employers.  It is a skill that is necessary.
