Poha is a simple and easy-to-prepare breakfast that is very popular among Maharashtrians. Poha is derived from the Maharashtrian language for flattened or ground rice. If you are alone at home for dinner and don’t have the energy to cook for long, you can do this. It means onion in the Marathi language and hence the term Poha was coined.

 

Combination of Onion and Poha

 

The combination of onion and poha makes this breakfast dish very tasty. In addition to the traditional South Indian breakfast of idlis, dosas and uttapams, poha and upma have a special place in every Maharashtra woman’s kitchen. If you’re late in the morning and don’t have time to eat it, you can easily pick it up and take it to work. It’s nutritious and healthy and a great meal to end a tired day.

 

Variations of Poha Recipe

 

You can make poha recipe with onions or potatoes or add both to the recipe. You can also add boiled peas, carrots and crushed coconut to the recipe. It all depends on your personal taste. If you want to go the healthy route, you can also opt for red poha instead of regular white poha for extra health benefits.

 

When serving, poha is usually served with small lemon slices to add aesthetic appeal. The bright yellow color of the poha has a beautiful appearance along with the green color of the coriander. Some people use green chili in the recipe, while others like to use red. It also depends on your family’s tastes and personal preferences.

 

Directions for Poha Recipe

 

Clean the poha, rinse thoroughly and soak for 10-15 minutes. Remove excess water and reserve. Heat the oil in a saucepan and add some mustard seeds. When they start to simmer, add the asafetida, curry leaves, chilli, onion and peanuts. Fry it over medium heat for about 5 minutes until the onion is brown and translucent. Then add the turmeric powder, rice pieces and salt, mix well with the other ingredients and boil for 2 minutes. Stir slowly once in between.

 

Once the poha is cooked, turn off the heat and leave it off for 1 or 2 minutes. Then serve on plates and garnish with lemon juice, coriander leaves and crushed coconut. You can enjoy this onion poha recipe with hot tea or coffee to complement the flavor. Relax!
