A guide to wallpapers

Wallpaper is a type of interior decorating material that is used to decorate the inside walls of both private and public buildings. It is normally offered in rolls and is pasted onto a wall. Wallpapers can be plain (so that it can be painted or used to help cover uneven surfaces and minor wall defects, resulting in a better surface), textured (such as Anaglypta), with a regular repeating pattern design, or, much less commonly today, with a single non-repeating large design carried across a set of sheets. The pattern repetition is the smallest rectangle that can be tiled to make the entire pattern.

Surface printing, gravure printing, silk screen printing, rotary printing, and digital printing are all examples of wallpaper printing processes. Long rolls of wallpaper are used to hang vertically on a wall. The pattern on patterned wallpapers is meant to "repeat," so parts cut from the same roll may be hung next to one other to continue the pattern without it being obvious where the link between two pieces occurs.

If the pattern traveling down the roll repeats after 24 inches, the next piece sideways is cut from the roll to begin 12 inches down the pattern from the first. For this reason, it makes no difference how many times the pattern repeats horizontally over a roll. A single pattern can be produced in a variety of color schemes.

Printing on demand

Custom wallpaper is being printed with new digital inkjet printing technologies that employ ultraviolet (UV) curable inks. Small runs, even a single wall, are possible. Blank wallpaper material is printed with photographs or digital art. Corporate lobbies, restaurants, sporting facilities, and house interiors are examples of typical installations. This allows a designer to create a place the precise appearance and feel that they wish.

High-tech

Wallpaper that filters specific mobile phone and WiFi signals in the interest of privacy is one of the new varieties of wallpaper under development or on the market in the early twenty-first century. Silver ink is used to cover the wallpaper, which generates crystals that impede outgoing signals.
