The digitalization of the everyday life in a world where communication, information exchange and collaboration are taking place over an increasingly smaller distances continues at large scale and has been taking place for decades. This is also the technological evolution that keeps the social networks to exist in order to be able to manage this interaction and share information.

At first, people didn’t understand its importance, but nowadays they realize the value that this technology allows for companies. In the last years of the 2000s, I had the opportunity to see how much it has impact on the business world. When I graduated from Kiel University, I was surprised by how many different sectors have become part of my profession. I remember seeing our professors working with more than one company for several years. It seemed like every day they’d be using new devices to perform their functions. At one point, we were introduced to several systems created by Microsoft which enabled us to store documents and information about clients, customers and other stakeholders involved in the field. These systems were called SharePoint. It was released in the early 2000s. And was later used to keep track of invoices and payments for businesses (it was actually named Business Objects until 2001).

In 2006 I became a CEO of Epson, one of the largest manufacturers of visual document imaging products. That same year I took charge of IBM Watson, the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tool for SAP. Thanks to Watson, IBM had been able to analyze data and make conclusions faster and more efficient. But there is something else to learn about the most successful machine learning, artificial intelligence and predictive technologies that I have seen throughout my career:

1) Their main interest is not technical, its the human aspect and being able to solve problems that arise when making decisions or performing tasks.

2) They don’t care about what kind of information is entered into the company’s system; instead, they focus on creating systems that makes sense and helps the whole organization reach its goals and objectives.

3) They invest in continuous improvement and innovation. After all, if you can imagine a future where machines will be smart enough to solve your everyday problems, it will probably be hard for them to continue doing the job in question.

4) Their work comes into action just after they learned about algorithms and computer science and not before and therefore they need to continuously train and make sure that they’re aware of the latest trends and the best practices.

5) Their approach is usually focused in the end and they try to use as few resources as possible. To keep employees motivated and constantly learn new things, they reward by giving some extra incentives for good performance. If they have a project in progress, they tend to give special bonuses, sometimes even having to close some offices that fail in certain points.

This is why I consider myself very fortunate because I’ve worked in IT for only four years and it’s never too late to start learning more about how technology works. So I decided that “I want to go back to school” and I started studying engineering at Universidad de La Plata. Nowadays, I'm working in Digital Engineering department of Salesforce, where my team consists of 4-5 members. We have already studied various fields such as Computer Science, Data Science, and Analytics, so we're interested in improving our knowledge in computer science.

One thing that I've observed recently is the increase of mobile apps developed by Facebook and Google and therefore you should take these apps as an example for your own app. Most of our students and the staff think that our apps are easy to install and yet complex because they require lots of programming and technology knowledge and this way we're providing our users a lot of technical knowledge, but with the help of computers, mobile apps will soon be available for everyone.

We're currently learning Python, JavaScript, SQL and JQuery languages, so we're trying to develop our applications with HTML5 and CSS. However, it's a bit difficult for me because it's not a usual language. But this way if I need to learn a particular feature and I can use Javascript, I know that I should, otherwise I will spend more time on learning how to code. This way I will get acquainted with computer and software development.

Nowadays, we study Software Development (SDD), web development, mobile application development, etc. All these subjects matter and it is important to learn all of them because almost everything has its value when you're developing. In contrast to what I have experienced from university, my teacher (not even a senior) who teaches at the institute says that the first two weeks of education are not really worth it since there's more you should learn and more that you shouldn't. However, after 5 weeks or 10 days from the beginning, he thinks that it's necessary to pass some math exams since they'll be useful later on so don’t forget to do as many practice sessions as needed
