Basic Jewellery Wearing Tips to Stand Out in a Party

When we ask people who shop jewellery in Singapore where they plan to use their pieces, they usually say it’s for a party. To be honest, this is true for most of us too.

But if you’re not sure how to use your jewellery for party outfits, you’re in luck - we’ll take you over the most important points here!

By the time we’re done, you should have a good idea of how best to use your pieces to stand out at any event. Without further ado, let’s begin!

1. Match the jewellery to the occasion.

Even if you want to stand out, you want to do so for the right reasons. Different parties have different dress codes, for instance, and you want to consider that in your jewellery selection.

For instance, let’s say you’re attending an event that involves your superiors at work or some other setting where a degree of formality is expected.

In that case, you wouldn’t be advised to choose jewellery that’s designed to be highly provocative or “alternative” in style.

Picking jewellery is like picking clothes. You have to think of the circumstances surrounding the occasion, then choose accordingly.

2. Think about your skin tone.

Each person has a unique shade for their complexion.

You might seem just as fair as a friend, for instance, but have a slightly warmer tone. Or you may both have cool tone, but you may be darker than she is.

These things matter as much in jewellery selection as they do in clothing selection. You have to try to choose jewellery whose colours go with your skin tone.

Hold jewellery up to your skin to see how it looks next to it. You can also ask a stylist or jeweller for advice, as they usually have keener eyes than most.

3. Contrast can be powerful.

One of the best ways to choose jewellery is to go with the rule of contrast.

If you’re wearing something simple or a monochrome outfit, for instance, it can be very effective to use jewellery that stands in stark contrast to it.

Elaborate necklaces, dangling earrings with radial patterns, bracelets heavy with gems - all of these can stand out, even more, when you put them against a fairly clean canvas.

By the same token, if you’re wearing something with a busy pattern, it can be a good idea to go with simpler adornments to match it.

Bands of polished precious metal around the upper arms, thick bangles, simple and elegant designs can look even better when put with clothes that offer more visual energy than they do, so to speak.

4. Be especially mindful of earrings and other jewellery worn on the head.

Earrings, tiaras, and the like are among the pieces you really want to be careful with. That’s because they sit around your face, which means they can either clash with it or accentuate its beauty.

Take into account what we’ve already said: go for jewellery that looks good with your facial skin tone and items shaped to offer contrast. As far as the latter goes, that means choosing earrings whose shape contrasts with your face.

If you have a round face, for instance, add interest to the look by choosing more angular earrings. If you have an angular one, choose rounder options.

5. Don’t be afraid to layer, mix, and match.

No one ever said you only had to wear one piece of jewellery to a party.

If the occasion permits, consider doing jewellery in layers or groups. Wear several necklaces together or several bracelets together. You can even put a ring on every finger!

Necklace layering with different-length pieces can be a great way to add interest to the look. It can even move people’s eyes up towards your face as they go from one pendant or necklace to another.

So as you can see, layering can be very advantageous if you know what you’re doing. Just be sure to test it out in the mirror and with a friend you trust first. You want to look glamorous, not like the person who just robbed the nearest jewellery store!
