Tips on Quick Recovery from Post Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Every people have back molars or wisdom teeth which are the last adult teeth that come in on the top and bottom of their jaws at the age of 17 to 21. These are extra teeth that can be removed if they hurt you and make chewing difficult. A large majority of people experience problems with wisdom teeth when their jaws have no enough room to accommodate wisdom teeth without shifting other teeth. Do you know Wisdom Tooth Extraction & Wisdom teeth removal is a common outpatient surgery that can take up to a week to recover. 


Usually, most people recover from wisdom teeth surgery within 3-4 days. If the teeth were impacted or at an awkward angle it would take a full week to recover. You can get back to your daily activities a day after the surgery, but be careful of dislodge stitches or the blood clot over the wound. 


For Quick Recovery

Avoid certain things after the surgery. Give some time to heal the area properly. Avoid smoking, spitting, and drinking from a straw. 

Follow your doctor’s advice. Take medicines on time and maintain good oral hygiene. Your doctor may instruct you the practices to avoid. It is better to keep it aside till the wound heals. 

Some common cleaning practices include rinsing with salt water to sterilize the wound area. While your rinse with salt water, don’t spit the water out instead tip your mouth over the sink and open your mouth to fall the water on its own. Use a cotton-gauze to absorb excessive blood if it is coming out. It is a normal condition when the wound is fresh. 


For pain management, your doctor will prescribe some medicines. Take the medicine as per your doctor’s advice. You can apply ice pack to reduce swelling and manage pain. You may get instruction to take some antibiotics as they prevent from infections. 


Some food items must be avoided till the wound heals such as extremely hot food and nuts. Start with very soft food items like soup, pudding, smoothies, and kichadi. 


If your wound healing is taking more than the usual time, you can pay a visit to your dentist for further recommendation. Some problems like trouble in swallowing, fever, numbness, and blood or pus from the extraction site need consultation with your dentist as soon as possible.
