How to help kids focus?

Start improving your child’s focusing ability! Focusing trouble can be a long-term or short-term challenge for kids. It makes learning hard and also affects their everyday life. Some kids are born with a stronger focus than others, but all kids can learn strategies and practices that help improve their ability to focus and sustain their attention.

Make your child practice focusing on a specific task

This practice can be done for even young children right from the age 4-5 years. They can usually concentrate for somewhere between 5 and 20 minutes, depending on the task. Make it like less time for new and challenging tasks, and more time with enjoyable activities.


Make kids do one thing at a time

Multitasking for kids reduces their concentration and diminishes their performance! If they can do one thing at a time in this one moment, they might do it more easily and skillfully. Young children might do well simply singing along with doing other activities. Older children can multitask more. Don’t overburden kids with more activities. Let them just focus on one at a time.


Set aside homework time and space

Multitasking weakens the focus of kids. Hence, it’s important to reduce irrelevant distractions. For example, kids can do homework at a desk or table assigned to them in a quiet room with the TV, mobile phone and the laptop off. There are many parental monitoring programs that can automatically shut down Internet access after a set amount of use. These help the kids to independently manage their time for other activities also. 


Help kids have planned breaks.

After spending some time focusing on something like studies, kids need to get up, move around, and do something different. This can work especially during after-school homework time. They will benefit from this change and have some time to rest and recharge. 


Help kids to practice belly breathing

Steady, diaphragmatic breathing or belly breathing slows heart rate and clears our mind. This calms the body & helps to concentrate. Kids should acquire this important skill to be ready when they’re confronted with challenging tasks which can make them anxious and spike their heart rate. 


Break big tasks down into smaller, more manageable pieces

A great strategy to help kids focus when faced with a challenging task! Help your kids to break down the big task into smaller units and focus on them. The child will not then feel intimidated with the big task then. Another strategy for building focus is to use a timer to help kids organize themselves and do things on time.
