How to make an optimal pallet loading plan?

For a logistics professional, knowing how to make an optimal loading plan is imperative. Indeed, although there are software packages allowing to make optimal loading plans (we will talk about it in our next articles), it sometimes happens that the computer system is faulty, or that we do not have the means to obtain such tools. In these cases, one would have to reuse the basic load plan logic to do this effectively.

transportation company businesses are a type of business that transports goods or passengers from one location to another. They can provide services to individual passengers, other companies or global trade partners.

We therefore propose, in this article, to review the technique for developing the pallet loading plan.

What is needed to make the pallet loading plan?

Here is the information you need to plan the stacking of your packages on the pallets.

· The dimensions of a package (Length, width, height);

· The dimensions of a pallet (Length, width, thickness);

· The nature and type of products;

· The number of packages;

· The gross weight of a package;

· The maximum height of the palletized load;

· The payload and the tare (the empty weight) of the pallet;

·  And stacking constraints.

The stages of development of the pallet loading plan.

When you know all the information mentioned above, you can move on to the development of the loading plan.

The loading plan can be divided into 4 main stages: The pallet loading matrix, the determination of the number of packages per position, the feasibility study and the determination of the final characteristics of the load.

Establish the pallet loading matrix

NB 1: The numbers entered in the boxes of the table only allow each box to be identified. These numbers will be used to identify the different positions that packages can take on the pallet. If you make this table on a sheet, you can put its numbers in a corner of each box to allow you to find yourself easily.

NB 2: The stacking height is different from the thickness of the pallet. To determine it, use the following formula:

How to fill in the boxes?

It's very simple. Simply divide the size of the pallet by that of the package on the same line as the box and take only the whole part (i.e., the number in front of the comma). An example to be precise:

Take box 8. The dimension of the pallet is at the top, it is the width of the pallet. The dimension of the package found on the same sign as box 8 is the height of the package. So, box 8 will contain the result of: width of the pallet divided by height of the package.

Another example? Box 6= Stacking height/width of the package.

By doing so, you will be able to fill in all the boxes containing the numbers. After this step, you must move on to determining the number of packages per position.
