How Long Does Microfilm Last?

Even though Microfilm was invented almost two centuries ago, it is still considered the best way to preserve documents and archives

With Digital Technology changing and advancing more and more every day, Microfilm is a great long-term storage method for records preservation. Due to its material which is made of, harder than paper, glass, occupies less space than paper records and does not require a computer or software to read the data.

The Microfilm's resistance to time makes it extremely secure. As long as you keep it stored properly, it will last centuries. If stored properly, the real lifetime of microfilm, goes to 500 years. Nowadays, people prefer to keep their personal multimedia backups digitally, since they may last forever, but they do not. Digital information seems to be around forever, but it will not. For example, if you keep it using a flash drive or USB drive, and this one, dies, all the information you kept, will be gone forever. Or, if accidentally delete it by mistake, it will be gone anyways.

Microfilm, is made to be eye-readable. You do not need special machines or programs to look at the content. So, this makes the microfilm the best physical method of ensuring your content and data as much as you would like to, without any other special needing or apps to see them.

If you are storing microfilm, it is important to know, you need humidity and temperature controlled area, to avoid any deterioration effects, but in case you do not, you can always keep your film in a cool environment, away from lights, chemicals, moisture, and heat.

Another advantage of this, is that Microfilm takes up a little space, even much less than hard copy records, which makes it economical in that sense too!
