How To Inspect Your Apartment Before You Move In (And Why You Should)

Just like when you get a rental car, when you first start renting an apartment you should inspect it for damages. If there are any damages or concerns, immediately report it to the housing office so that they can repair it. If you don’t report damages when you first move into your UVU college apartment, you could be held liable for them when you move out. If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a list of things to do at move in.

1.   Have something to properly record anything you find. It’s common to be given a form by the property to make notes of any damages and the UVU college apartment will keep it on file. You should also keep a copy of the document. If they don’t provide you with a form, create one yourself with the dates and descriptions of everything. You can also take pictures of the damages to report them.

2.   Check all the walls. A lot of times students will hang things on the walls of their off-campus housing near UVU, but when they take them down it peels the paint or leaves a hole in the wall. If there is any sort of mold on the walls, alert the housing office immediately and don’t move in until it is cleaned up.

3.   Check the baseboards and door frames. Just like on the walls, you want to look for any dents or marks. You also want to be inspecting for cleanliness. If the student apartment by UVU is pretty crusty, you can request it be cleaned before you move in. If there’s a large amount of little scratches and things on the walls, just take a picture and make note of the general condition rather than recording every little detail.

4.   Notice any stains in the carpet. Professional carpet cleaning can be expensive, and you wouldn’t want your UVU student apartment to take that cost out of your deposit.

5.   Look over the hardware. Open and close the doors, cabinets, drawers, and anything else to ensure that they are in good working condition. If there are any issues, your UVU student housing will send up maintenance to fix it.

6.   Test your appliances. It’s pretty important to have functioning cooking appliances, and a fridge to keep your perishable foods safe.

The most important thing to take away from this is to record and report all damages. Wherever you may live, the property managers are responsible for making sure your space is clean, safe, and functional upon moving in. Are you on the hunt for quality student housing by UVU?
