Dry Needling VS Acupuncture In Singapore: Differences And Similarities

People often mistake dry needling for acupuncture in Singapore or vice versa because of their similarities. For starters, the two therapies use needles to puncture the skin for the treatment. But other than that, dry needling and acupuncture are different from each other.

Here are the differences and similarities between dry needling and acupuncture:

1. HISTORY AND ORIGINS

Dry Needling

People can trace the origin of dry needling to the 1940s when Dr. Janet Travell and Dr. David G. Simon discovered the "wet needling", or puncturing the skin with needles with the tips dipped in liquid drugs to bring relief.

Because several studies and research supports dry needling, it has become a part of modern Western medicine.

Acupuncture

The history of acupuncture dates back to Ancient China during the 6,000 BCE. But instead of fine needles, people used sharp stones and bones for the treatment.

It is also believed that Ötzi the Ice Man, who lived in 3350 and 3105 BC and was discovered in the Ötztal Alps, had undergone acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a part of traditional Chinese medicine in Singapore.

2. TREATMENT USED FOR

Dry Needling

Dry needling is primarily to bring muscle relief. In dry needling, the needles are punctured in tight muscles for stimulation and gradual release of the knots in the muscles.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has many therapeutic claims. There is acupuncture for fertility, back pain, headache, stress, and more.

Acupuncture is based on the Chinese philosophy of chi flow or energy flow. People suffer from ailments and discomfort when the energy pathways are blocked. Acupuncture helps unblock the pathways by inserting needles into specific points.

3. TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Dry Needling

A licensed physical therapist needs at least 72 hours of training and education about dry needling before performing the practice.

Acupuncture

An acupuncturist needs to have at least a valid three or four-year bachelor's degree and more than 3,000 hours of training in the use of needles, diagnosis, ethics, and so on. Some also require students to pass the licensure exam and acquire board certification before practicing acupuncture in a TCM clinic in Singapore.
