How to look after ballet clothes

Whether you're performing or simply practicing, dance outfits, adult ballet skirt, cheer uniforms, dance costumes, and dance shoes can become pricey. By learning how to clean and care for them at an early age, you may save money in the long run.

Leotards

To maintain their flexibility and texture, modern leotards are made from high-performance materials that need greater maintenance. Always wash ballet clothing in solid colors inside out to prevent snagging. It's possible to wash them by hand or in the machine on a delicate cycle with a moderate or sports detergent. Avoid using fabric softeners, which may build up on the fibers and impair the leotard's breathability. Use only warm or cold water, never hot. Drying them in the dryer is not recommended. Instead, place them near a source of heat, such a radiator or the sun.

You may remove stains from the leotard by following the guidelines given for each kind of stain before washing. When using oxygen-based bleach (brand names include OxiClean, Clorox 2, Country Save Bleach, or Purex 2 Color Safe Bleach) with cold water to treat heavy body filth and perspiration, follow the recommendations on the container. Soak the leotard for at least two hours and as long as overnight before washing it as usual.

Metal-tinted tights

More delicate than normal fibers, leotard metallic thread is used. They may even break or discolor if subjected to washing. Always use a soft touch while cleaning metallic artwork. To avoid damaging the threads, do not use fabric softeners or strong detergents.

Tights and leggings

Warm water and mild detergent are ideal for hand washing any tights and leggings. They should be placed in a mesh bag before being placed in a washing machine. Use a mild detergent, cold water, and a gentle cycle to get the best results. The use of a fan to dry clothes instead than direct exposure to heat is recommended. Use a cold dryer for drying. If you need to dry your clothes quickly, opt for the dryer's air-only tumble mode.

Inappropriate clothes for the dance floor

Cheap textiles and one-time use are common features of many dance costumes, especially those for children. Avoid cleaning or washing the costumes before the first performance, since they may fade or lose their shape.

Before entrusting the adult ballet skirt to someone, make sure to read the care instructions carefully. You may wash the vast majority of them by hand in cold water and a little detergent. Before washing, remove as many bows and trimmings as possible. The costume should never be washed in a wrung out state. After wringing off excess moisture using a towel, lay flat or hang to dry. To keep it from fading, keep it out of the sun.

Costumes made of satin, chiffon, leather, or velvet should be cleaned by a qualified dry cleaner.

Costumes for ballet dancers are often referred to as "tutus" because tutus are a symbol of growth and development. Although the vast majority of ballet tutus and leotards are separate items of clothing, the cleaning techniques are the same.

When it comes to cleaning tutus, the most challenging part is keeping them from becoming crushed. To wash a simple tutu, use a large bathtub or sink with warm water and a little bit of mild detergent. Wash the tutu by giving it a gentle swirl in the sink or bathtub. After emptying the tub, flush it with clean water. Remove the tutu, shake it to remove as much water as possible, and hang it to dry naturally.

The tutu's metal hoop should be removed before washing. Rusty metal might spoil the tutu. Any further trimming should be removed in order to prevent fading. Beads and sequins that were glued on rather than hand-sewn may slip off during the washing process.

Shoes with a Slight Pointe

The suede soles of many dance shoes tend to accumulate a lot of dirt and wax because of their elasticity. The soles may be cleaned with a suede brush after each use. It is best to brush the suede in a single direction to remove debris and restore the nap.

You may use a mesh bag from Diamond Laundry to clean canvas dance shoes in the washing machine on a gentle cycle with cold water. Allow them to dry out on their own. You may need to wrap them in white tissue paper in order to preserve their shape.

Leather shoes should be cleaned using a leather cleaner or saddle soap. Window cleaner may be sprayed onto a white cloth and used to clean patent leather shoes.
