There are many reasons to learn Spanish. Which one is yours?
You already know English and you don't like to swot up on French? But you still want to exercise your brain cells and learn a new language? How about Spanish? If you're still struggling with this idea, you should read on. We'll show you seven reasons why learning Spanish rocks:
Talk to 570 million people
One of the top reasons to learn Spanish: Spanish is a world language. If you master this language, you can talk to 570 million people in the world, including second language speakers. After Chinese, Spanish is the second most widely spoken native language. On the American double continent, it is even the most common mother tongue. In total, Spanish is the official language in 21 countries and numerous international organisations.
Build on your previous language skills
If you already know French, Italian or Portuguese, you will have an easier time learning Spanish. Since all these Romance languages have a common predecessor language - Latin - they have a similar structure, which makes learning a lot easier.
Spanish is relatively easy to learn if you already know another Romance language.
Give yourself an advantage in the job market
If you work in the hotel industry, in tourism or, for example, in the luxury goods sector, you will always have an advantage with foreign language skills. In addition, due to the large number of Spanish speakers, many companies are increasingly expanding into Spanish-speaking countries. Knowledge of Spanish is therefore a plus on your CV either way.
Make travelling easier
Have you always wanted to travel through Central or South America? Then we recommend that you learn a few words of Spanish. Depending on where you are, you may not be able to get around without Spanish. It's also cool to be able to talk to the locals and immerse yourself in their culture. Check out our blog post "Spanish on the Panamericana".
In many places in Latin America, you can't get by without knowing Spanish.
Order your paella in the local language
Soak up the sun, lie on the beach and enjoy paella and sangria in the evening. If you speak a little Spanish, you can order your meal in the local language and maybe even impress the handsome waiter. This will make you feel a little less like a tourist on your holiday and help you get to know the country and its people better.
Give yourself access to the creative scene
Pablo Picasso, Pedro Almodóvar, Penélope Cruz, Gaudí, Julio Iglesias... Whether it's art, film or music, knowing Spanish gives you a different approach to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Even if there are translations into all kinds of languages, nothing can beat the original version. Have you seen the Netflix series "La casa de papel"? Wouldn't it be cool to be able to watch it in Spanish?
Knowing Spanish opens doors to Spanish culture.
