Finding the Right Bra Sizing for You, No Matter Your Breast Size

If you're anything like me, then you know the pain of trying to find a Bra Sizing Chart that fits. It's not easy: sometimes they don't fit right, and sometimes they're too tight or too loose. Sometimes they're just not comfortable. Trust me, I've been there, and it's no fun! That's why I'm sharing my favorite tips on finding the right bra size for yourself, regardless of your breast size.

First, let go of old notions about bra sizing.

If you're unfamiliar with the current system, it's based on a measurement around the fullest part of your bust instead of under your bust or around your back. While this can be confusing for some women who haven't adjusted to the change, it also means that many women have been wearing bras that are too small for them—and not just by a little bit. The old system was based on measurements taken under each breast; if you measured 34 inches across both breasts, you would be considered a size 34B (or maybe even 32C). Since the new Bra Band System is based on measuring at the fullest part of your chest and then adding four inches to get an accurate bra size, women who were previously labelled as 36B or 38C may now find themselves in cup sizes D-K depending on how their bodies have changed over time.

To determine the band size.

  • Measure around your ribcage, not just at the bra band. Your bra sizing band should sit level across your back and lay flat against your skin without digging in, but if it’s too loose or too tight, you won’t get that level support.
  • If the measurement of falls between sizes (for example, if it measures 30 inches), go with the smaller size. This can be true even if there is extra fabric on one side of the bra—you may need to do some alterations after purchasing it, but this will prevent chafing or another discomfort during exercise.

  • If you have a large ribcage and are looking for a higher-impact style with more coverage in front (like sports bras), try measuring around both sides of your chest instead of just one side—this will give you a better estimate of how much room you need when choosing which size is best for you!

To determine the cup size.

Use the difference between your bust and band measurements to determine your cup size. If you have a small difference in measurements, choose the next cup size up. If you have a large difference between the two measurements, try going down one or even two cup sizes. This is especially true if your band measurement is larger than your bust measurement—it’s important to get the right fit and support for this area!

Bra Sizing Chart

You won’t necessarily be the same bra size in every style.

You might be surprised to learn that you won’t necessarily be the same bra sizing in every style. Bra sizes are different for different styles, brands, manufacturers, and materials. For example, if you’re in the market for a sports bra or wireless bra, the fit will be different than if you’re shopping for a t-shirt bra. The same goes for styles made with different materials—a lace cup will have a different fit than one made of soft cotton.

Fitting

After you've tried on several bras, you'll be able to tell if a bra is the right size for you. It's important to remember that as with any clothing item, fit is always going to vary from one brand and style of bra to another. The general guidelines below can help you in finding a bra that fits well:

  • The band should not ride up your back or dig into your skin. The band should be parallel with the floor when worn without straps or undergarments such as socks or stockings (if applicable).
  • If the cup fits correctly around your breast tissue, there will be no gaping at the top of the cup—the material should rest flat against your chest without falling away from it at all ends of each breast.
  • If there is extra fabric around this area, consider having it removed by a tailor before purchasing if possible!

Conclusion

We hope this guide has helped you to understand how bra sizing works, and why it can sometimes be difficult to find the right size. If you’re still unsure of your bra size, want more guidance on fitting, or have any other questions about bras!
