How Do You Choose a Basin Tap in Singapore?

New bathroom basin taps are an excellent way to improve the overall appearance of your bathroom without having to spend money on a full renovation. Choosing a basin tap in Singapore is not as simple as it sounds as a variety of basin taps are found in the Singapore market today. So, let's take a look at the different types of basin taps in Singapore and what to look for when choosing a basin tap.

What Are The Different Types Of Basin Taps?

  • Mono basin mixer tap

Mono basin tap, also known as monobloc tap, is the most common type of modern bathroom basin tap in Singapore. It, as the name implies, requires a single tap hole and has a single spout from which both hot and cold water is dispensed. Most of the mono basin mixer taps have a single lever that controls the flow and temperature; however, there are some twin lever taps that have one lever for hot and one for cold water, giving you more control over the temperature. Mono basin mixers are available in a wide variety of styles, including modern and traditional, curved and square, waterfall, and aerated spouts. There are numerous finishes available, with chrome being the most popular, but matt black, stainless steel, gold, nickel, and even brushed brass mono basin taps are also available.

  • Basin pillar tap

Basin pillar taps have two taps, one for hot water and one for cold water, and are more common in traditional-style bathrooms or bathrooms in older homes. Pillar taps come in both modern and traditional styles and are an excellent value. If you choose pillar taps, make sure your basin has two tap holes.

  • 3 hole basin tap

3 hole basin taps work similarly to mono basin mixers, with both hot and cold water coming from a single spout, but they require three holes. The spout goes in one hole, and the hot and cold levers go in the other two. This gives you excellent control over both water flow and temperature, though it may require you to adjust the controls with both hands to achieve the desired temperature. The styles are modern and traditional. Another thing to consider is that 3 hole basin taps are generally more expensive than mono basin taps and basin pillar taps, but extra style comes at a cost.

  • Wall mounted basin taps

Wall-mounted taps are the most modern basin taps, and they are ideal for use with a countertop basin. By mounting the taps on the wall, you clear the area around your basin and create a much more minimalist appearance. Wall-mounted taps were once only found in the most opulent hotels, spas, and restaurants. Nowadays, you can get a wide range of wall mounted basin taps for a luxurious look. Wall mounted basin taps, like all other types of basin taps, come in a variety of styles. There are modern and traditional designs, ones with a single temperature and flow control and ones with separate hot and cold water handles. There are also those that include a backplate and those that do not. If you want the most modern and minimalist look, avoid taps with backplates and it also means less cleaning.

  • Digital basin taps

With the rise of the smart bathroom, it's not surprising that you'll now find a selection of digital basin taps that'll bring your home firmly into the twenty-first century. The tap features temperature-changing LEDs and an easy-to-install digital valve that allows for precise, thermostatic control with just the lightest of touches. Choose between basin and wall-mounted designs to complement your ultra-modern bathroom space.

What to Consider Before Buying A New Basin Tap In Singapore

When selecting a bathroom tap, consider the style of your bathroom. Is it modern or traditional? Cross-head taps are ideal for creating a timeless and elegant look, whereas waterfall taps are ideal for adding a touch of chic, designer style. To get the most out of your new taps, make sure they have the correct pressure for your home's water system. Low pressure water systems are usually gravity fed, and have a pressure of less than 1.0 bar (1 metre vertical distance between the tap and the bottom of the cold water storage tank will give you 0.1 bar of pressure). If you have this type of system, you will need to select basin taps that are specifically designed to operate on low pressure. High pressure systems include mains fed, pumped, and combination boilers. If you have a high-pressure system, you can select from a broader selection of taps. Low pressure is defined as up to 0.5 bar, medium pressure is defined as 0.5 bar to 1.0 bar, and anything above 1.0 bar is considered high pressure.
