Carburizing Heat Treatment: Everything You Need To Know

Carburization heat treatment is the process of turning steel with low carbon into steel with high carbon. It is done by putting it in place with a lot of carbon in the air. Most of the time, things are carburized in furnaces, vats, and other enclosed spaces.


If you heat something made of steel in an atmosphere with a lot of carbon, carbon atoms will stick to its surface on a molecular level. These carbon atoms will become harder and stronger when they stick to their surface.


Carburization is one of the most common ways to harden the outside of steel, giving different steel levels of hardness. An item will generally be harder after carburization if the heat is higher and the process takes longer.



Carburizing Steel: How It's Done


There is more than one way to carburize something. Four different kinds of carburization heat treatment are used most of the time. 



Here are the four things that happen while the case hardening process:


Vacuum Carburization


First, we will talk about how vacuum carburization works. In this method, steel alloys are put in a low-pressure environment with no oxygen. Then, a gas like a hydrocarbon is pumped into the environment, which makes it possible for carbon molecules to stick to the alloys.


Because the process doesn't use oxygen, making it nearly impossible for steel alloys to rust. It lets high heat be pumped into the enclosed atmosphere, which greatly speeds up the carburization process.


This process takes place inside a closed furnace. If the furnace can't completely keep oxygen out, it can't do what is needed.


Liquid Carburization


Liquid carburization is a type of carburization heat treatment that happens in something like a liquid vat. This vat is full of different things, like cyanide and salt.


When metal alloy pieces are put into this mixture, they come into contact with a group of carbon molecules. Most of the time, these carbon molecules will move quickly into the alloyed items, making a hard shell in a short amount of time.


When steel has been liquid carburized, it usually has a lot of carbon and not much nitrogen.


Carburization of Pack


Pack carburization is a process that involves putting high-carbon items close to steel items in a furnace. Some of these high-carbon items are carbon powder, cast iron particles, and other things.


After you put these things in, carbon monoxide will heat them. This gas pulls carbon from the surface of the carbon-dense things in the furnace because it is a carbon reducer. Once these carbon molecules are no longer attached, they will move to the surfaces of the steel items that need to be carburized.


It is the method of carburization that is the easiest to do. You can do it in a garage or home workshop.


The problem is that it isn't reliable and is sometimes different. Even though it lets carbon move through the steel, this only sometimes happens evenly across the whole thing.


Carburization of Gas


Gas carburization is the last kind of carburization that we'll talk about. Gas carburization is similar to pack carburization in that carbon monoxide has to be pumped. The difference is that it doesn't need carbon-dense things to happen.


In this process, carbon monoxide is constantly pumped into a closed space. This place is warmed to very high temperatures. Carbon molecules can move into hardened steel items by heating them to high temperatures.

It is one of the most common ways to make carbonized steel, and it always makes carbonized steel that is the same all over. Because of this, it is very useful for mass carburization.


There are several good things about carburized steel. We'll talk at length about these benefits below:


Very tough outside


It's easy to understand: steel that has been carburized will have a very hard outside. It can handle a lot of physical damage without wearing out too quickly.


Even though there are steels with harder surfaces than carburized steel, they are more expensive and easy to work with. They don't have the desirable combination of a soft inside and a hard outside like carburized steel does.


Inside Is Soft


Carburized steel is also very useful because it has a soft interior. It's easy to make it into different shapes because it's soft inside. It makes it especially useful for making metal objects with hard surfaces that are complicated (i.e. internal machine components).


Some steel alloys that have yet to be carbonized have naturally hard surfaces. But they don't have the softness that needs to be shaped and formed in complex ways. They don't have the desirable combination of a soft inside and a hard outside like carburized steel.


Cheaper than most things


If you only care about the surface hardness of a steel alloy, carburized steel is by far the cheapest option. The cost of making steel alloys is much higher than the cost of making steel that has been carburized.
