Everything about SAT Exam Pattern: Question Types, Marks, Exam Time & More

The colleges and institutions require SAT scores as part of their undergraduate admissions procedures. These standardized examinations are used to evaluate an applicant's abilities or college preparation. Possessing a high SAT score and a respectable GPA increases your chances of being admitted to the best universities overseas for a bachelor's degree.

In March, May, June, August, October, November, and December, the College Board administers the SAT seven times year. However, you must be committed to passing the SAT in no more than two attempts. To do so, you must begin your preparations early and obtain all relevant information regarding the SAT exam pattern, syllabus, and prerequisites, among other things.

This site elaborates at length on the SAT paper format and other pertinent questions, such as SAT total points, SAT exam duration, and more.

Overview of SAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT, is a standardized test that qualifies applicants for undergraduate programs in institutions around the world. The SAT curriculum focuses primarily on Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. According to the most recent rules, a new component entitled "optional essay" has been added to the curriculum. All three portions assess a student's vocabulary, sentence creation, data analysis, mathematics, grammar, and other problem-solving abilities. There are also various SAT mock tests online that can give you a glimpse of the main exam.

Except for a few questions in the math portion, all of the questions in this part are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). Since there is no negative marking on the exam, it is advisable to answer all questions within the allotted time.

SAT Reading Section

Reading is an integral aspect of the SAT curriculum for Indian students. As the name suggests, this portion consists of 52 questions assessing reading comprehension. There are five passages followed by ten to eleven multiple-choice questions to be completed in sixty-five minutes.

The passages are based on topics like:

Classical or modern literature with an emphasis on the United States.

A significant publication or address on constitutional or political issues.

Any topic pertinent to Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Science, among others.

SAT Writing and Language Section

The SAT Writing and Language portion is also comprised of multiple-choice problems in which you must repair logically and grammatically incorrect statements. This area of the SAT curriculum is mostly concerned with evaluating your grammar, vocabulary, and language skills.

It consists of four passages containing 10 to 11 passages each, which must be covered in 35 minutes. You must first read and comprehend the chapters before answering the questions within the time limit.

SAT Math Section

The math section of the SAT is broken into two sections. The first section is a 25-minute test without calculators. The duration of the second SAT test is 55 minutes, and calculators are permitted. This part contains a total of 58 questions on topics such as mathematics, statistics, geometry, data interpretation, probability, and problem-solving.

SAT Essay Section

The College Board, which administers the SAT, modified the SAT question paper structure. The previously administered subject tests have been replaced with optional essays. Regarding the optional essays, you must remember the following:

  • Although the essays on the SAT exam are optional, most universities need a passing grade in this area. Numerous colleges also mention it as an essential or recommended element.
  • The SAT essay component for Indian students provides an opportunity to demonstrate reading, writing, and analytical skills.
  • This section contains a 650-to-700-word passage. You must begin by carefully reading the passage so that you can analyse the author's ideas and perspective. The SAT exam duration here is approximately 50 minutes.

A high SAT score is one of the best strategies to improve your chances of earning a bachelor's degree at prestigious universities abroad. Start your SAT preparation early and acquire in-depth understanding of the curriculum and test format. One can obtain the ability to complete all SAT questions within the allotted time with additional practice.
