Best time to visit Pench National Park

The weather in the Pench National Park is extreme and tropical because it is in the central part of India.

Because of this, the sanctuary is open every year from October to June. But a few buffer zones on the Maharashtra side of the park stay open during the monsoon season. As with most parks in central India, the winter is the best time to go to Pench National Park.

Pench in the winter

Mid-October is a good time to go to the Park because there won't be as many people there.

Between November and February, when the weather is nicest, is when most people come to visit. During this time, the temperature stays between 14 °C and 30 °C. But it might be cold in the early morning and evening, especially in December and January. There is a chance that the temperature will drop very low and frost will form, so you might need to bring a little bit of warm clothing with you. Wildlife is much easier to spot because there isn't much dense vegetation. In Pench, people have seen more than 200 different kinds of beautiful birds.

Pench during the springtime

From January to April, you can see many migratory and local bird species, such as the grey-headed fishing eagle, Malabar pied hornbill, Indian pitta, coots, bear-headed geese, peafowl, kingfishers, and crimson-breasted barbets, to name a few. Here, owl breeding is very popular, but it's rare to see owls during the day or even on a sunset safari. Winter is also the best time to see plants in full bloom, such as the more than 1300 species of rare medicinal plants, ghost trees (also called White Kulu), bamboo, teak, and many others.

Pench in the summer

From March on, the colour of the plants starts to change. But from March to May, the chance of seeing a tiger goes up by a lot. This is because the grass dries up and there is less water when it is very hot. So, these animals are more likely to be near the water sources that are still there. But at this time of year, the temperature may reach 42°C, making safaris hot and uncomfortable. So, if you go to Pench in the summer, wear cotton or linen clothes that are light in colour. It's also important to carry a water bottle to keep from getting dehydrated. Even though the weather starts to get better in June, it can still be very hot, so not many tourists come during this month. Also, the monsoon season is about to start, which makes it hard to go on safari.

Pench during the rainy season

Around the second week of June, the monsoon season starts in this area. The sanctuary gets light to heavy rain, and this is the time of year when animals have babies. But even light rain can quickly turn into a big storm. So, during the rainy season, the park area in the state of Madhya Pradesh is closed (July-September). The park is at its most beautiful, and after the monsoon season, in October, the sanctuary turns back into a lush green place where people can go again.

On Holi and Diwali, the Park is closed for one day each. On Wednesday night, the park is also closed. But the park area, which is in the state of Maharashtra, is open every day of the year. Tourists should plan their trips so they can see animals and birds in their natural habitats and get a breathtaking view of the Pench National Park.
