Online Learning Trends

2023 will be a major breakthrough for the online learning sector, which has been making leaps and bounds in terms of popularity, convenience and affordability. Online learning has exploded since 2020, alongside the sudden transformation to remote working and distance learning due to the pandemic. Many businesses have also started to focus on digital solutions to training and development as a way to cope with the new circumstances.

The demand for online courses of varying disciplines is increasing, particularly for those related to work such as professional development, coding, programming and project management. Short-term courses or certifications to equip people with new skills will become more popular as many people upskill instead of changing jobs. According to an INSEAD study, 46% of executives plan to pursue additional qualifications by 2023. Mobile learning is also expected to become increasingly important, with popular providers like Coursera, Udacity and edX offering customized learning experiences tailored to different devices and user preferences.

Learning and Development Trends

The trend of learning and development is shifting from structured corporate training towards personalized and outcome driven initiatives, often developed in partnership with external providers. Company-wide programmes such as digital upskilling, leadership development and job shadowing will become increasingly popular in many organizations.

The trend to use immersive learning instead of traditional learning processes is anticipated to grow, as virtual and augmented reality technologies can be used to more effectively simulate real-world scenarios. This has been gaining popularity since 2020, when virtual reality training was used as a way to train and equip employees with the necessary skills while working remotely.

Many companies have also embraced self-determined learning paths, which allow employees to take full ownership of their learning and skills development. Platforms such as LinkedIn Learning and Skillshare provide access to an extensive library of video tutorials and courses from trusted sources, allowing users to create their own individualized learning plan.

Corporate Training Trends

As businesses increasingly adopt digital technologies and emphasize on innovative training solutions, companies will shift their corporate training priorities. Many business leaders are predicting that structured corporate training formats, such as classroom-based sessions and seminars, will decline due to their low scalability, inefficiency and long completion times.

Instead, micro-learning, or short but frequent learning activities, promise to become ubiquitous. These short, easy-to-digest lessons are designed to be bite-sized and engaging while delivering knowledge efficiently. Microlearning can be used to transfer knowledge quickly and is mainly geared towards performance support. Companies may also adopt a blended learning approach that combines traditional training with online tools, such as simulations, live streams and assessments.

Finally, businesses will no doubt turn towards data-driven training, using analytics and machine learning to measure performance outcomes and identify skill gaps within their organisation. This will enable more effective training and resource allocation in the future.
