eNACH Mandate: Future of Digital Payments

eNACH, which stands for Electronic National Automated Clearing House, is a modernised payment system that facilitates the electronic recurring payment clearance process. Introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which was made to provide individuals and businesses with a way to make regular electronic payments easier.

The mandate on which eNACH works is known as the eNACH mandate. This is a legally authorised document that works as consent between the beneficiary and the payer for agreed payments. It also enables a financial institution to repeatedly debit funds from an individual's bank account for specific services or payments.

eNACH and eMandate work in close collaboration and thus provide a friendly interface for users to make electronic payments easily. The two not only facilitate an easy electronic transaction but also provide a secure and risk-free zone for it to occur.

With the involvement of financial institutions and approval from the government, eNACH can be called the future of digital payments.

What is eMandate?

Before diving into the details of eMandates, it's important to understand the meaning of recurring payments. In simple terms, recurring payments are automotive payments authorised by the customer for the service provider to debit regular payments from their bank accounts.

These payments are in the form of OTT subscriptions, utility bills, financial services, SaaS, and even retail and groceries. Any service that involves regular payments falls under recurring payments.

With recurring payments understood, eMandate is the authority or consent a customer gives to the service provider to debit payments from their bank account for recurring payments. This made the process of recurring payments efficient, timely, and hassle-free.

The authorization of this eMandate can be done easily by using net banking or debit card credentials.

What are the benefits of the eNACH mandate?

The eNACH mandate offers a lot of benefits as compared to traditional payment processes by eliminating the use of pen-paper making eNACH a faster and more efficient process. The removal of physical mandates also made the facilitation of services like loan repayments, utility bills, subscriptions, and many more hassle-free.

Additionally, eNACH mandates provide security from unauthorised transactions and fraud risks by leveraging encryption and digital signatures. The process of making payments has also become hassle-free and convenient with the arrival of this technology.

Considering the benefits for businesses and individuals, eNACH helped with timely payments, improved cash flow management, reduced the risk of errors, and even decreased the cost of administration.

With so many benefits and conveniences for all three parties—payers, beneficiaries, and financial institutions—eNACH mandates will surely be an important technology in the coming days.

What is the eNACH mandate process?

In the simplest of terms, the eNACH mandate process is a way for businesses to get their customers enrolled in the services/products for which they will pay a regular fee.

The steps for this enrollment are as follows,

  1. Registration of mandate: this will be initiated by the payer or the customer, who will start the eNACH mandate registration with the beneficiary or the service provider. This can be done online as well as in physical form.
  2. Authorization and consent: in this step, the payer provides his consent and gives authorization to the beneficiary to debit recurring payments from his bank account. This is done by signing the mandate online as well as in physical format.
  3. Verification: In the verification process, the financial institute or the payer’s bank verifies the authenticity of the eNACH. This is done by confirming the payer’s identity and his account details. The verification may involve some documentation or even a KYC procedure.
  4. NPCI registration: Once all these steps are completed, the beneficiary submits this eNACH mandate to NPCI through the sponsored bank. NPCI then verifies and registers the mandate for recurring payments.
  5. Confirmation: This is the step where NCPI sends a confirmation to the payer or their bank that the mandate has been registered with them for the process of recurring payments to the service provider or beneficiary.
  6. Recurring payments: with the completion of the eNACH mandate, the beneficiary can now set the due date for the recurring payments. The payer’s bank or the financial institute will debit the amount and credit it to the beneficiary's account on the required date.
  7. Management of the mandate: the payer has the right to change or cancel a mandate as per the requirements. This could be easily done with the help of customer support or simply by the payer’s bank's net banking portal. The mandate thus remains under the control of the payer.

These steps will remain subject to the financial institution involved, the bank used, and even the service provider. They may vary depending on these conditions, but the process will be similar with a few variations.

Conclusion

Overall, eNACH and the eNACH mandate play a vital role in promoting digital transactions and enabling efficient recurring payments. By leveraging technology and automation, they offer a secure, convenient, and reliable method for individuals and businesses to manage their financial obligations effectively.

The process, which once required a lot of hassle and consumed time and resources, can now be done with a few clicks and tabs in real time. It not only helps the beneficiary receive payments on time but also reduces the payer’s stress of remembering the dates, which if missed can sometimes create a lot of trouble.

Veri5 is a place where the beneficiaries can set up NACH e-mandates to collect recurring payments from their customer’s bank accounts directly. Their usage of agnostic APIs and SDKs on their platform helps in integrating the eNACH with their apps using their preferred language.
