How to Reset Drum on Brother Printer: A Detailed Guide

Have you just installed a new drum on your Brother printer? And now you want to reset it? Don’t worry. This blog is about resetting the drum on a Brother printer. With this easy-to-follow tutorial, you will learn how to reset drum on Brother printer in a few quick steps.

In addition, if you are going to reset the drum for the first time, then RELAX! I was a bit worried on my first attempt. I remember how I forgot to open my printer’s front cover. As a result, I could not proceed, and I couldn’t reset the drum. This is because some printers can only be reset when the front cover is open, and some not at all. This is where I took the help of a blog to complete this resetting process further.

So, before you make any mistake, it would be better to follow this guide in which I have explained how to reset the drum in a Brother printer (different types of printers). Read till the end and reset the drum in the correct way. Let’s get started!

How to Reset Drum on Brother Printer?

I would like to inform you that the Brother printer has a page counter that cannot be reset on its own after the installation of a new drum unit. The main use of this counter is to keep a record of the multiple pages that have been printed out. So, after replacing the drum, we also need to reset the page counter.

In contrast, I don’t recommend anyone resetting the drum page counter until they put it in a new drum unit. Despite this, different printers have their own resetting systems, meaning steps vary slightly. So, you should always check your printer’s user manual.

But do you know there are many types of Brother printers based on their control panel or screen? Similarly, the process of resetting the drum on a Brother printer is also different for different printers.

Here are four types of printers based on their panel:

  1. No screen or panel
  2. A small LCD and a simple control panel
  3. LCD screen & numeric keys
  4. Touchscreen with a keypad

Now, let me tell you how to reset drum on Brother printer, including these different types. Let’s start with the first type.

Option 1: Brother Printers Without a Panel or Screen

I have seen some Brother printers, such as the older HL series, do not come with a screen for navigation. But don’t worry, you still have a chance to fix it. Here’s how to reset the drum:

  1. To get started, turn on the printer.
  2. Then, open the front cover and then press and hold the Go button.
  3. Here, you need to wait for LEDs to light.
  4. Finally, hit the Go button again and shut the front cover.

Option 2: Brother Printers With LCD (Without Numeric Keypad)

In this type of printer, you will see a simple LCD, also called a one-line LCD, that comes with a notification board and menu navigation.

I have seen that the DCP Brother printer series usually uses such a system. So, when you see a Drum Stop message, you will need to follow the points mentioned below to reset the drum.

  1. Open the front cover and keep the printer ON.
  2. Now, you have to push and hold the OK button until the screen shows the Drum Unit.
  3. Then, hit the OK button again.
  4. Finally, use the UP arrow to reset the drum.

Option 3: Brother Printers With LCD (Numeric Keypad)

Some larger Brother printers come with a larger panel or screen that also includes a numeric keypad. Let’s see how to reset drum on Brother printer with an LCD screen:

  1. Firstly, you should keep the printer on and open the front cover.
  2. Now, hit the Clear button to resolve the error message.
  3. Then, press 1 numeric key from the given numeric keypad to reset the drum.
  4. At last, you will see the Accepted message.
  5. Lastly, close the front lid.

Option 4: Brother Printers With Touchscreen

The touchscreen is available only in larger Brother laser printers. Due to this feature, it is easier to reset the drum as we can track the process on the screen. Here’s how to reset drum on Brother printer with a touch screen:

  1. First of all, you have to press the red cross button (Cancel) button to clear the drum error.
  2. Then, click on Settings > All Settings.
  3. Now, use the arrow key on the touch screen to navigate tothe Parts Life section.
  4. Here, you need to press and hold the # sign on the panel. As a result, a Reset Menu will appear.
  5. Finally, select Drum and click on Yes if prompted with the Reset option.

Conclusion

Through this blog, you might have understood how to reset the drum on four different types of Brother laser printers. These four types of printers are usually categorized based on their control panel or screen. Due to this, the procedure to reset the drum also varies. Therefore, I have explained the process for each of them in this blog. Read and follow each step clearly to clear the drum error message. Good Luck!

FAQs

Question 1: How can I fix the drum stop error in my Brother printer?

Answer: If you see the ‘Drum Stop’ error on your Brother printer, then you need to follow the points mentioned as follows:

  1. First, open the front cover of the printer.
  2. Then, you need to press the Clear key. The display will show you a ‘Replace Drum?’ message.
  3. Afterward, you need to press the Up arrow key to choose the Yes button.
  4. Your LCD screen will show ACCEPTED, and then it will say Close Front Cover.
  5. Next, close the printer’s front cover.
  6. Then, confirm the display or status monitor message will not appear.

Question 2: Can I reset the drum for Brother printer every time I replace a toner cartridge?

Answer: No, you don’t need to reset the drum in order to replace the toner cartridge. However, resetting the drum is only recommended when you want to replace the drum, not toner. In addition, the approximate service life of one drum unit is equal to three or four toner cartridges. Hence, I think you don’t need to reset the drum every time when you are replacing a toner cartridge. So, reset the drum only when you are replacing it.

Question 3: Do I need to open or close Brother printer’s front cover while resetting the drum counter?

Answer: Well, it depends on the printer you are using. In some printers, you may need to open its front cover before starting the resetting process. However, some may not need to be opened. Hence, you should always check for the printer’s manual. Also, if you want, you can try both these methods, as the printer will not allow you to reset the drum if the front cover is not in the desirable position.
