Here’s Why You Have Back Pain When You Wake Up

There are several reasons why you may experience back pain when you wake up in the morning. Here are some of the common causes:

  1. Poor sleeping posture: Sleeping in a position that puts pressure on your spine, such as sleeping on your stomach or in a fetal position, can cause back pain.

  2. Old or worn-out mattress: Sleeping on an old or worn-out mattress can cause your spine to become misaligned and result in back pain.

  3. Muscle stiffness: If you have been in one position for an extended period of time, your muscles may become stiff, causing back pain. It is common and recommended that you alternate between sleeping on both sides as well as on your back at night.

  4. Injuries or medical conditions: Injuries such as sprains, strains, or fractures can cause back pain, as can medical conditions such as arthritis or osteoporosis.

  5. Muscle Imbalances/Spinal Misalignments: Both of these can cause back pain because a muscle imbalance or a spinal misalignment will produce unequal pressure on your spinal joints. If you feel like you might have a spinal misalignment and/or a muscle imbalance, consider seeing a chiropractor for help.

Dr. Bob Mason, a chiropractor at Active Life Chiropractic in Charlotte, NC, recommends a combination of spinal adjustments with at home stretches to help stop back pain upon waking. “I often treat patients who have already tried changing mattresses and sleeping positions but have had little relief of their back pain. Many times, a spinal imbalance was the underlying cause, and once it is corrected the pain subsides and a person wakes up feeling great!”-Dr. Bob Mason
