A USB Isn’t Just for Storage, You Can Track Prospects Too

A USB, which stands for Universal Serial Bus, is a handy plug and play portable device that communicates with other devices. It is commonly used to connect a computer to other devices such as digital cameras, printers, scanners, flash drives, among others. For the most part, USB has been widely popular as a storage device and other computer peripherals such as a keyboard, mouse, and external hard drives.

Being first released in 1996, USB came with two different versions - USB 1.0 and USB 2.0. The difference between the two lies in their transfer speeds. The first version which is USB 1.0 supports up to 11 Mbps while the second version has a speed of up to 480 Mbps.  Until it was developed and added four more versions; USB 3.0 - 3.2, USB 4.0,  from the years 2011 to 2019. The current USB which is USB 4.0, has a speed of up to 40 GB per second. What does this mean to you as a regular user of a flash drive? A supersonic transfer speed allowing you to transmit data from your regular flash drive to your computer back and forth.

With the on-going development of USB’s, is it safe to say that it’s built for storing and transferring data only?

USB as a Tracking Device

Yes, you read it right. USB isn’t just a mere storage device even though it’s widely known to be one. Over the years, it has also been developed for security reasons. Say, for instance, a USB tracker that has a built-in GPS that locates your position wherever you may go. For a regular person like you, getting this device helps you track your children’s whereabouts or spy on your loved ones maybe?

Though its usage may prove beneficial to regular users, USB has been a subject of debate for government agencies. In fact, the U.S. Department of Defense has banned the use of USB drives and other removable devices since 2008. For them, the risks associated with USB is a potential threat to their security. It was found out that the virus that infiltrated their computer system came from USB. Moving forward, the ban has been lifted after two years but with limitations on its usage towards their security. Despite the threat, most of them still consider a USB drive to be inexpensive, portable, and handy.

USB as a Marketing Tool

Building your brand to your target market seems to be critical in today’s fluctuating economy due to the steep competition. But armed with the right strategy, it can be as easy as familiarizing the alphabet. Enter promotional USB drives, a marketing approach that uses USB to track prospects and their activities, promote products and services, boost brand awareness, and increase the bottom line.

Being a high-level marketing tool, a marketing USB drive or webUSB, has positioned itself in the market as a cost-effective method in driving brands leaving traditional marketing methods behind. This specific approach is highly customizable depending on the client’s needs. One company that produced this unique tool is bigDAWGS Promotions. Their wide range of USB web key products ranges from:

  1. webMAGNET - custom printed mini magnet with a webUSB that links directly to a specific website or URL.
  2. webCARD - custom printed card or brochure with a webUSB that links directly to a specific website or URL.
  3. webBC Slide Out - a business card with an automatic slide-out webUSB that links directly to a specific website or URL.
  4. webBC Express - a business card with a webUSB that links directly to a specified website or URL!

On a Final Note

Taking everything into account, a USB that once was introduced to connect different devices has become a high impact tool to leverage businesses from the changing economy. It’s not a simple storage device alone but it has turned, by far, into an essential means of delivering the voice of every brand to the market successfully.
