Before Starting a Career in Ethical Hacking [5 expert tips]

As we have reached the ending quarter of 2020, it is time to talk about the year’s emerging careers. While new career avenues have been paved, one such new prospect is ‘Ethical Hacking’.

Hacking! Something that sounds wrong and nothing close to a career. The majority of the population has this idea that ethical hackers hack websites to retrieve information. Now, that is partially true.

Ethical hackers are responsible for hacking into systems for official purposes. They are to filter out security issues and breach-able points of a system and provide solutions. Ethical hackers can be hired by the government or organizations that deal with sensitive and confidential data.

Before you start to plan a career in ethical hacking, here are some tips from career experts.

  • Understand the types of hacking

Hacking has its types meant for different purposes. There is White Hat, Grey Hat, and Black Hat hacking. White hat and Grey hat hacking is part of the ethical hacking domain. Black Hat on the other hand is unethical and illegal. However, all of these are put into action by the government or organizations to resolve purposes.

One of the most identified foundation jobs in ethical hacking is Penetration Tester. They work on the loopholes of system security to protect it from external threats.

  • Assess your skills and academic background

Before choosing a career it is important to evaluate the suitability of it. There is not any particular academic curriculum for ethical hacking. Some organizations ask for Computers Major or an IT background, or some say Mathematics also makes a great base.

However, a thorough knowledge of coding and programming languages are a must-have for this career.

Are you skilled enough to be an ethical hacker? Test your aptitude here.

  • Learn Programming

Hackers need to master several programming languages and also have knowledge of operating systems. Learn a bit of everything like C++, Java, Python, and systems like Linux, IOS, and Windows. Look for viable courses that can help you learn these.

  • Stay Updated

Organizations would not hire you because of a certificate, but for your skillset. Keep your eyes and ears open to the changing trends of technology and the newest additions to the hacking domain.

  • Get that certification!

If you have an interest in becoming an ethical hacker, we suggest you get a certification. EC Council is the most trusted body for this certification. To get approved in an ethical hacking program, one must appear for the CEH examination.

To appear for CEH examination:

  • Attend official CEH training and get approved by EC Council; or
  • Attend directly with documented proof of information security experience of 2+ years and $100 application fee.

With certification and full knowledge of the hacking procedures, one can get hired in Government sectors, military services, Hacking consulting companies, and more.

Do not just sit and wait for the dream career to come to you. Go, learn, and hack!
