How to get registered as an engineer?
For registration, you must need to visit the NSW Fair Trading web portal. From some categories, you need to furnish the Certificate of Competency issued by Engineers Australia (EA). if in doubt whether you are in that category or not, you just need to visit the NSW Fair Trading website to find out.
In case of being in the category requiring the Certificate of Competency from EA, you must go through one assessment out of the four competency assessments.
Engineers Australia evaluation is based on three forms of eligibility necessary for the registration of engineer professionals. A design practitioner needs just one competency test-vertical transportation.
What are the four competency tests?
- Competency Assessment PE1 (before 1989 engineering qualification)
- Competency Assessment PE2 (below two years of Australian experience)
- Competency Assessment PE3 (qualifications and experience not accredited)
- Knowledge and Skills Assessment DP (-VT) – Skills and knowledge of vertical transportation systems

- You have already got assessment results (Engineers Australia’s Migration Skills Assessment) for being a professional engineer.
- You have already received evaluation results from Engineers Australia’s Stage 1 Eligibility for Membership Assessment for being a professional engineer.
Not assessed or listed qualifications:
It is for those not having been evaluated by Engineers Australia and without the qualification listed in Engineers Australia’s list of Accredited Programs listed for professional engineers. Here, you need to have an entry to practice qualification assessment.
For the entry to practice qualification assessment, you must have the following:
- Documents to show your claimed qualifications, which include transcripts and testamurs. (Scanned copies made in 300dpi settings).
- Information regarding any other professional development you had.
- A resume with your names and contact details about the references you make for verification and information about your work experience.
- A document with three career episode reports (PDF) showing that you have displayed sixteen elements prescribed under Engineers Australia’s Stage 1 Competency Standard for Professional Engineers (PDF).
- Any other professional registration documents.
- Documents showing your communication ability in English.
- You have read the terms and conditions and signed (PDF).
Competency Assessment PE2 requirements (documents):
- A resume having your names and contact information about your references for verification and information related to your work experience.
- A document having three career episode reports (PDF) showing building codes and standards you have had in the past.
- Any other professional registration documents (PDF).
- Proof of having signed and read terms and conditions.
Competency Assessment PE3 requirements (documents):
- Documents to prove the claimed qualifications, including transcripts if mentioned.
- A Document explaining the details of any professional development you might have acquired. It could be a course or training for the improvement of skills.
- Resume with names and contact details about your preferences for verification of your work experience.
- A document that includes three career episode reports (PDF).
- Evidence of any other professional registration you have.
- Document showing that you are capable of communicating in English (PDF).
- Terms and conditions read and signed (PDF).
