The role of indigenous women

Women are essential pillars in indigenous communities and peoples and play a crucial role in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge and practices.

They have an integral collective and community role as caretakers of natural resources and guardians of scientific knowledge and are increasingly taking the reins of initiatives such as the defense of lands or the vindication of the rights of indigenous peoples throughout the world.

Women's traditional knowledge helps preserve the long history of interaction of these peoples with the natural environment, but also encompasses a cultural complex that ranges from language, classification and naming systems or resource use practices, to rituals, spirituality and worldviews.

Despite the crucial role they play in their communities as breadwinners, caregivers, knowledge keepers, leaders, and human rights defenders, they often experience intersecting levels of discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Their right to self-determination, self-governance and control over ancestral lands and resources has been violated for centuries.

Indigenous women have made small but significant gains in decision-making processes in some communities. They are leaders at the local and national levels, and they are at the forefront of defending their lands, their cultures and their communities. চাকমা কবিতা

However, the reality remains that indigenous women are vastly underrepresented, disproportionately negatively affected by decisions made on their behalf, and all too often the victims of multiple expressions of discrimination and violence.

This International Day of Indigenous Peoples, let us reclaim the role of these heroines.
