The new iSafe system detects intrusions onto the tracks and alerts commuters who approach too closely to platform edges in real-time. SMRT mentioned that this initiative adds reinforcements to existing safety measures such as warning signs and regular announcements.
Understanding the iSafe System
When someone loiters in the yellow "Keep Clear" section, the iSafe feature informs the Operations Control Centre (OCC). Employees can then trigger announcements remotely to remind commuters to stay behind the yellow line. A loud alarm goes off when an intrusion is detected on the track, alerting the control center in real-time. The system displays annotations of the incident and provides a live CCTV stream of the site. Staff can then intervene and implement measures such as switching off traction power to stop trains.
Previously, observers at the command center had to monitor stations by constantly watching screens. Under the new system, cameras are strategically positioned to capture incidents, providing both visual and audio alerts to staff in control centers. SMRT introduced the program a year ago, conducting several rounds of testing and trials to ensure its effectiveness.
