What is Gomukhasana?

The term Gomukhasana, a seated yoga pose that places your body in a cow-face-like posture, is derived from the Sanskrit translations of go (cow), mukh (face or mouth) and asana (pose). Gomukhasana is a combined yoga pose like Surya Namaskar yoga pose, stretching and working multiple parts of the body including shoulders, thighs, hips, ankles, triceps, chest and armpits. It mainly focuses on the hips and shoulders, two areas that cause pain and stiffness. The yoga pose Gomukhasana is mentioned in the Darshana Upanishad in the 4th century and is not only a very effective exercise but is also used in Yoga Nidra, Pranayama and meditation due to its therapeutic effects. It helps to release hormones like endorphins, which give a feeling of calm and relaxation, which is of great benefit.

How to do Gomukhasana?

1. Start by sitting on the mat with your spine straight. Extend your legs in front of you.

2. Place your palms on the floor and bend your left knee. Place your left foot under your right hip, lifting your body slightly.

3. Bend your right leg and place it on your left thigh.

4. Bend your left arm and place it behind your back.

5. Gently bring your right arm over your right shoulder and stretch as far as you can until it reaches your left hand.

6. You may not be able to connect both hands at first, but with practice it will come to you.

7. Open your chest, keep your body straight and lean slightly back.

8. Hold this pose for several breaths.

9. Focus on your breath and slowly return to the starting position.

10. Should hold the pose for 30-60 seconds while breathing continuously. You can start with 10 seconds and gradually increase the duration.
